NIST Switch Project Description

Mark Carson - Michael Zink

This is an outline of a project for creating an environment (NIST Switch) for the implementation and testing of new IP routing protocols, in particular the new ``multilayer label switching'' protocols. The intent is to allow for the quick development and testing of various proposed elements of these protocols, using only commonly available hardware and software (at the low end, stock PCs with common Ethernet cards running Linux or FreeBSD). This paper covers both the lower-level aspects of the problem (what we need to get label switching to work), and the higher-level aspects (some things we want to do once when we get it working).
